It just drive like a pure EV car for a while then when the charge drops lower it switches to being a hybrid gas-electric. SO on short trips you use zero gas. on longer trips you use only gas. Over a year of driving you can potentially expect an average fuel economy of 103mpg according to the government official ratings.
